Thank You – Play with Docker!

At Kubecon in Austin I was talking with my good friend Jonas Rosland about  how I was getting to train a group of new Pure SE’s on Cloud Native Apps and planned on doing labs with installing docker and running apps in containers. I was going to get every student a vm and let them spin up some containers. He reminded me of Play with Docker.  What I great idea I thought.

He not only did that but went a head and introduced me to Marcos who was the developer for PWD.  On the expo floor I was able to sit and chat with someone that created quite a cool way for people to experience Docker. Just a cool thing about people that do something for the community. A nice guy that was willing to answer questions and was not too busy to help someone out.

Since I had a good number of students logging in at once it seemed a good idea that we set it up on our own. So in just a day I spun up the environment and let the students get to work. Everyone had their own playground that ran Docker in Docker. Everyone got to do something they normally would not get a chance to play with.  Once I clean out some of the Pure specific stuff I will post the class and slides to Github.

I will create a post about what it took to get it up and running on my own in the next day or so. This is more of a thank you for all the work Marcos did to create this cool project for everyone to enjoy.

My First Big Data

Ok while I was on vacation away from all things virtual last week. Some reason I had some deep thoughts about Big Data. At least deep for me. So this is mostly incoherent rambling, but I want it written down in case it happens.

What I kept coming to is how will data be used in a way that is NOT trying to sell me some XYZ product?

Mostly I think about big data as pulling public (or private) data about me in order to gain some edge to get me to buy the next tablet or phone.

I don’t know much about the entire big data industry, but I thought there must be more, and isn’t just about finding what I think about a brand on the twiiter.

Researchers – create a bunch of data about X. Give us cool graphs on the internet about how X and Y intersect. I feel this is extremely important. The next cures will be created outside a lab and 50 test subjects. Obvious Jon, I bet someone has already said that.

Innovation – can the next big thing be the output of some insane amount of data? How do I create a solution to a problem everyone has but they don’t know about yet? How can it be beyond the Social media craze. Big data is bigger than social networks. The next idea needs crush Google, Apple, Twitter and Facebook. I know there are armies of geniuses at those companies but the next thing will be created by someone we don’t know. Maybe I can use big data to find that person before anyone else?

VMworld 2010 – In-N-Out Burger Meetup

Last year we had a great time going to In-n-out. For someone like me that was born and raised in Southern California, In-n-out is one of those things I must have when coming back to California. Luckily there is a location within a short trolley ride of the Moscone Center / VMworld 2010. If there is a lesson from last year if you are not used to public transportation you may need some practice. 🙂

Being a VMware vExpert would be vAwesome

The VMware vExpert program was announced today. I could think of many people in the vCommunity (you know the name is coming) that would easily get this award (at least in my opinion). I will admit I do not know everything and from this website it is easy to discern that very fact.

When I have a problem with anything virtual, it is very rare to not find an answer in the forums or one the many blogs. So much good information out there. So I would like to say thank you and keep being awesome.
